Summary

Formula Student AI (FSAI) is a sub-competition of Formula Student UK (FSUK) held at Silverstone and hosted by IMechE. Teams are required to develop an autonomous driving system for a small race car which will be tested along various tracks at the competition (through dynamic events). Additionally, teams must demonstrate subject-matter knowledge and their understanding of the autonomous system (through static events). Bristol FSAI will compete in the ADV-DDT class, so the vehicle which the group will program is supplied by IMechE (the ADS-DV, pictured below) and does not have to be built from scratch.

Events

Dynamic Events

These are the events where teams demonstrate their system’s abilities through autonomous driving tasks. This includes 4 events:

  1. Acceleration — Straight line acceleration test.
  2. Skidpad — Lateral acceleration test.
  3. Sprint — Single lap of a track (no learning).
  4. Track Drive — 10 laps of a track after 1 lap of learning.

Static Events

These are the events where teams demonstrate their subject-matter knowledge and their understanding of the autonomous system. This includes 4 events:

  1. Business Plan Presentation (BPP) — The objective of the AI Business Plan Presentation (BPP) is to assess the team’s ability to develop and present a comprehensive business model.
  2. Real World AI (RWAI) — The Real World AI event is predominantly a technical event and will focus primarily on the team’s understanding of the real-world challenges for autonomous vehicles.
